Beyond Genitalia and Geography: Settling the Truth About God’s Gender and Identity Once and for All

Let’s be honest for a moment: human beings have an absolute obsession with putting the Creator of the universe into tiny, neatly labeled cardboard boxes.

If we aren't arguing on social media about whether God approves of modern gender politics, we’re forming entire theological movements to claim that the Almighty belongs exclusively to one specific gender, culture, or skin tone.

Back when I was at university, I had a memorable encounter with a trio of self-proclaimed "evangelists" on campus. They cornered students with intense enthusiasm, insisting that God is strictly and exclusively a woman.

We engaged in a long, spirited debate. But as is usually the case when a whole religious group builds its entire identity around a single specialized claim, reasoning with them using plain Scripture proved nearly impossible.

It did, however, highlight a massive problem in modern culture: we are constantly reducing the infinite, self-existent Creator down to human biology.

With gender equality laws, ideological debates, and identity politics sweeping through modern culture, people get terribly hung up on questions like: "If we are made in God's image, does that mean God is male or female?"

It is time to look at what the Bible actually teaches, clear away the cultural clutter, and settle this subject once and for all.

A majestic, high-contrast visual representation of creation. A radiant, unapproachable golden-white light beams down from a starry cosmic background onto the earth below, where the hands of a human figure reach upward in reverence, emphasizing the infinite spiritual nature of God above human biology.

The Biological Fallacy: God Does Not Have Genitalia!

Let’s be completely explicit right off the bat: God does not have human genitalia.

God is not made of flesh, blood, muscle, or reproductive organs. As Jesus plainly stated in John 4:24:

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Human biology—including physical gender, reproductive organs, and anatomical systems—was designed by God specifically for earthly creatures to reproduce, populate the planet, and navigate physical life on Earth (Genesis 1:28).

To look at human physical anatomy and project those physical biological requirements onto the eternal God of the universe is a fundamental misunderstanding of basic biblical theology.

God didn't need a biological gender because God didn't need a mate, nor was He created by parents! He is self-sufficient, self-existent, and completely uncreated (Exodus 3:14).

So, what does it actually mean when Genesis 1:27 says, "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them"?

Being made in the "image of God" has nothing to do with the shape of our physical bones or our biological organs. God is the Master Engineer who designed the complex biological systems of our human bodies from scratch, but the image He placed within us is spiritual, mental, and moral:

  • Free Will & Moral Agency: The capacity to make conscious, independent choices rather than acting merely on animal instinct.

  • The Capacity for Love: The ability to experience unselfish, self-sacrificing agape love (1 John 4:8).

  • Dominion & Moral Stewardship: The duty to lead, care for, and govern the rest of earthly creation (Genesis 1:28).

  • Worship: The spiritual capacity to connect with, communicate with, and freely choose to worship our Creator.

A Fun Fact: Parenthood as a Window into God

If you want a glimpse into the emotional nature of God, look at human parenthood.

Raising children gives us a tiny, practical taste of what God experiences with humanity. You love your children fiercely, yet they will inevitably err, disown your advice, or make mess after mess. You instruct them, set clear boundaries, and apply discipline when necessary (Hebrews 12:6).

You know things they cannot yet comprehend, so you bear with their weaknesses. You set out explicit guidelines and lay down the consequences of bad choices, yet you watch them wander off anyway. And when they stumble, your heart yearns for their redemption, growth, and return.

That tender, long-suffering, patient relationship is a reflection of God’s character toward us (psalm 103:13).

Why We Use "He, Him, and Father" (And a Quick Grammar Note!)

Some groups, including traditional Islamic scholars, refrain from using masculine pronouns like "He" or "Him" for God to avoid anthropomorphizing Him. While the desire to keep God separate from human biological male identity is understandable, the Bible intentionally uses masculine language for a vital structural reason.

When Scripture calls God "Father" (Matthew 6:9) or "King of Kings" (1 Timothy 6:15), it is not assigning Him male biological organs. It is establishing His supreme authority, protection, governance, and position.

In ancient patriarchal culture, the king occupied the highest, loftiest, most elevated seat of ultimate authority and responsibility. The father was the provider, protector, and covenant head. By identifying Himself as our "Father" and "King," God communicates His absolute sovereignty and His protective covenant relationship over us.

And here’s a quick linguistic and editorial reminder: when writing about the Almighty in English, always capitalize the pronouns (He, Him, His) and never spell God with a lowercase "g" unless you are referring to pagan idols! Beyond being proper English grammar, it reflects basic reverence for the Sovereign of the universe.

An open ancient Bible resting on a dark wooden podium, illuminated by a warm beam of light highlighting the text of John 3:16, emphasizing universal salvation over human political divisions.

The Identity Trap: Why Reducing Salvation to Race or Politics Is Lethal

Just as people try to drag God into gender wars, others attempt to reduce Jesus Christ to racial and political arguments.

You will occasionally run into groups teaching that Jesus was a black man, or arguing that Christianity belongs exclusively to one ethnic demographic.

Let's stick strictly to historical and biblical fact: Jesus of Nazareth was a Middle Eastern Jew (Hebrews 7:14). He was born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and fulfilled the exact Hebrew messianic prophecies written centuries prior in the Old Testament.

To deny His historical Jewish identity is to ignore the explicit text of Scripture. But here is the far more vital truth that every believer must grasp: God knows no race, and salvation has zero ethnic favoritism.

As the Apostle Peter declared in Acts 10:34-35:

In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

The Almighty did not select the ancient Hebrew nation because they were genetically superior or physically special. Deuteronomy 7:7-8 explicitly tells them that God chose them simply to be a light and a missionary channel to reach the rest of the world.

Tragically, many ancient Jews mistook their missionary calling for exclusive privilege, assuming salvation belonged only to them. Because of that spiritual pride, many rejected the Messiah when He stood right in front of them and were tragically lost (John 1:11).

A person does not need Jesus to match their physical skin color in order to believe in Him and be transformed by His grace.

The Gospel transcends every human border, skin tone, and tribal division. Black, white, Asian, and Hispanic believers who accept Christ’s sacrifice and do His will will stand together on the Sea of Glass (Revelation 7:9). Meanwhile, anyone of any ethnicity who rejects His law and His mercy will be lost.

A vibrant, diverse crowd of people from every tribe, nation, and ethnic background standing together in harmony, looking upward towards a glowing cross in the sky, illustrating Revelation 7:9.

Major on the Majors: Salvation vs. Trivial Arguments

Humanity loves to major on the minors while completely ignoring the things that actually determine our eternal destiny.

Gender equality laws, political identity theories, and racial debates have their place in civic discourse. But when compared to the grand, eternal reality of our personal salvation, these earthly squabbles are completely trivial!

When Jesus stands before the universe at the judgment, He is not going to evaluate us based on our political views, our biological debates, or our ethnic ancestry. He will look for one thing: Is His character of love and obedience written in our hearts?

As Paul wrote in Galatians 3:28:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

God is an infinite, self-sufficient, holy Spirit who created us out of pure love. He designed our physical bodies, gave us the dignity of free choice, and provided a way of salvation through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Let’s stop trying to drag the Almighty down into our petty earthly arguments, and start focusing on surrendering our lives to the King of Kings!
